Ariel led the gelding into the empty arena, tired after a long day of riding. There were at least two more horses to ride - Affie and Lily. It was later than normal riding hours - many, if not all, of the clients had gone home already to eat dinner and relax with their families. Affie snorted and shook his head, black mane flying, startling Ariel out of her thoughts. "I love you too, buddy." She hopped up in the saddle for what felt like the millionth time that day and sighed, relaxing her legs. She jogged the twelve year old in a couple of circles, warming him up. He quickly relaxed and behaved, a good headset and great movement.
She nudged Affie with her spur and clucked to him, the horse springing into a good, collected canter. She pushed with her legs, bringing his hind end up under his body and getting that nice, flowing cadence that everyone wanted. About that time, she got that feeling that someone was watching her, but ignored it, instead pointing the gelding at an easy 2'6" jump. He cleared it easily, with good form and a smooth landing. She pointed him to a blue and white 3' vertical and, once again, he did it like the pro he was. As she eased him up, she heard the gate open and looked over, not expecting anyone to come in and ride.
